I wouldn’t know personally, since so far none of the other material has made it into English.) Twenty years later, humanity still huddles in the tunnels of the Metro. (Other authors, with Glukhovsky’s blessing, have explored the Metros of other major cities across the world, which are ostensibly serving a similar function. The only survivors are those lucky few who managed to escape to the Moscow Metro system, which acts as a massive fallout shelter. In 2013, the world ended in nuclear fire. How could I pass it up? I have a weakness for post-apocalyptic stuff in general (or at least I’ve liked most of it I’ve encountered thus far), and the premise was intriguing. Anyway, I ran across a short interview some gaming magazine did with Glukhovsky about the follow-up game Metro: Last Light, and determined that this was a book I had to get my hands on. I haven’t played it yet, but I hope to do so at some point in the future. I first became aware of this novel, as did most of the non-Russian world, because of the video game. The pages are made of thick card which will hold up to just about any colouring medium (this is the same card as used in the Secret Garden Artist’s Edition). This book includes 20 of the original images from Enchanted Forest, printed single-sided. These issues were taken on board by the publisher and they have responded with this Artist’s Edition. However, many of us colourers found that the spine caused a problem because some of the middle of each image was lost into it and the double-sided printing meant that those of us who wanted to use pens of any kind had to sacrifice a number of images on the reverse or resort to colouring with mediums we weren’t so keen on. Enchanted Forest, illustrated by Johanna Basford is one of the worldwide bestselling colouring books and with good reason – the images are stunning, beautifully detailed, tantalisingly intricate and beautifully put together. Still, if you’d like more of Marlowe’s fictional adventures after this, check those out! This features the same historical main character as Elizabeth Bear’s Promethean Age books Ink and Steel and others, but stands alone and is straight-up historical fiction rather than historical fantasy as those are. Throw in a mysterious Greek book, a couple of murder attempts, and an archbishop, and you have a great mystery/coming of age tale. Meanwhile, Kit is experiencing a secret first love with another boy and negotiating his relationships with his mother and younger sisters, all excellently characterized. Unfortunately, this puts both Kit and Watson in grave danger. Oh, and someone’s just murdered the older scholar friend who gave him a window into a new world.Įnter Tom Watson (a real historical figure, though used fictitiously) who is also trying to solve the murder. This is a really fun murder mystery/adventure set in 16th-century Canterbury as a 15 year old Christopher Marlowe, the future playwright, struggles to build a future beyond what his abusive father (the cobbler of the title) envisions for him. Then, they called me on a Friday and said "Can you come for one more casting?" I went in on Monday for the last screentest with one other actress, it was down to the two of us, and then Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. So the sadness of realizing I might not get to bring her to life was very weird. I went from assuming there was no way I would get this part because, I'm not even English and they'd probably want "a name." But by the time the audition process was over, I wanted this part badly because I felt like I understood her. I was just staring at my phone while riding this emotional roller-coaster. Then, I didn't hear from them for two weeks, which is a long time. I was called back 2 days later for another screentest and then called back again two days after that. But they still had to meet lots of other actors because casting a project of this size is such a large puzzle. But Max, who is gorgeous, sexy, handsome and hot but more than that, a good man and a damn fine actor, instantly made me feel comfortable and I think people saw our connection in the screentest. On the other hand, Peter Millar, in his review for the London Times, said that the novel is: Brown takes the format he has been developing through three earlier novels and fine-tunes it to blockbuster proportion In this gleefully erudite suspense novel, Mr. On the one hand, we had reviews like that of Janet Maslin, who in her review of the book for the New York Times said: ‘The Da Vinci Code’ generated a lot of reactions. The book debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and as of 2005, the novel had been listed in the New York Times bestseller list for ninety-six weeks. Its three predecessors were not very successful, but it was ‘The Da Vinci Code’ that brought Brown to the literary spotlight and even cast light on its predecessors who also went on to join the bestseller list. ‘The Da Vinci Code’ is the fourth novel written by Dan Brown and the second novel in the Robert Langdon series. Each season improved running has without a doubt been the super important end goal, but the challenge has always been finding different ways to reach my goal that DID NOT involve the treadmill or endless walking-lunges. I've been a marathon and ultra-marathon runner for years and have always enjoyed working out at the Alaska Club. My confidence and health is worth it, and I’m so glad I can work with Hannah! My 13-year old talks about how much muscle I have now, and I just hope that I can inspire her to dedicate time and effort to her own fitness as she grows. I have gained so much strength in these few months, and I can tell a huge difference in my everyday activities and with my agility. She is able to correct my form and encourage me just as if I were in the gym with her. Hannah continued to push me and formulate workouts just for me. I wasn’t sure how the virtual sessions would work, but my concerns quickly faded when I realized I could still progress, even from home. One day, Hannah gave me a call to see if I would be interested in doing some virtual personal training (VPT) over Zoom. I spent a couple of months trying to figure out how I could continue my training and stay healthy for my kids while my husband was deployed. I was making awesome progress when the pandemic hit. For the past 15 years, I’ve been making excuses and saying “one day I’ll get back in the shape.” I decided to invest in myself by working with a trainer at The Alaska Club. Reproduced above is the broadside “Ode to the Mammoth Cheese. 29, 1801, and Leland himself was on hand to present it, pointing out – somewhat uncomfortably to slave-owning Jefferson – that the cheese “was produced by the personal labor of freeborn farmers and with the voluntary and cheerful aid of their wives and daughters, without the assistance of a single slave.” Engraved with the patriotic motto “Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God,” the cheese was shipped to Washington via sleigh (hauled by six oxen), sloop, and wagon. When finished, it measured four feet across and 17 inches high, and weighed, once cured, 1,235 pounds. It was made from the milk of 900 impeccably Republican cows and pressed in an outsized cider press. The cheese was the idea of Baptist Elder John Leland, a Jefferson supporter in the fraught election of 1800 in which Jefferson (a Republican) defeated John Adams (a Federalist). The tradition began in 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson was given a gift of a giant cheese from the citizens of Cheshire, Mass. Historically, however, they’ve also been paired with – yes, really – large wheels of cheese. American presidents are traditionally associated with Air Force One, the State of the Union, “Hail to the Chief,” and the West Wing. |
